Alyssa and I just spent our Night Shift at the Museum much more pragmatically than usual. Alyssa ran out of business cards recently, and we decided to use the excuse to create some new cards using only the materials available to us at the International Printing Museum. To challenge ourselves further, we were only “allowed” […]

Outtakes: Three Steps Ahead business cards
Categories: General updates
We had a lot of fun during the process of creating our new business cards, and some of the seemingly-useless byproducts were put to good use. Greg crafted avant garde jewelry. And Alyssa and Greg came up with a menagerie of handcrafted paper creatures and objects, coincidentally shaped exactly like the Three Steps Ahead business […]
Three Steps Ahead letterpress business cards

And so, the moment has arrived: our new cards are complete! I previously wrote about much of the process that went into the design and creation of these cards. I won’t repeat myself too much, but when we left off, the plates were made, proofs had been printed, but the run had not been completed. […]
An identity emerges: Three Steps Ahead letterpress business card proofs

Nautical Prohibition (or Forbidden Promotional Products)

This one-off sailor jacket and canvas tote bag was emblazoned with the wordmark we assembled, inspired by one of the best boat names ever. Typefaces used are Blaktur, the over-the-top Germanic “fett” Blackletter by House Industries, and Loupot, styled after the lettering of Charles Loupot, a prominent mid-20th-century French poster artist.

NYU’s Stern School of Business commissioned us to create an identity for their new experience, the Sophomore Cohort Creativity Challenge, a series of events that are geared towards creating camaraderie among Stern sophomore students, while working towards positive goals in the local community. To that end, we created a look and feel that was applied […]
A Link to the Past
Categories: Case studies, Inspiration
I’ve been on a bit of a “ribbon lettering” kick lately. For this brochure/identity design, I was heavily inspired by a number of different sources, both old and new. I wanted to conjure the notion of “link,” without using a cliché chain illustration in the process. The idea of roads and paths intersecting felt apropos […]
Star Waggons Holiday Card 2009
Categories: Case studies
We just put together this year’s Star Waggons holiday card. It’s yet to be printed1, so enjoy this 3D pre-visualization instead. We’re also dangerously short on snow here in Los Angeles, but if it were 30° colder outside, today’s rain storm would look something like the simulated North Pole shown above. Actually it’s been printed […]
